The Mars One Project aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars. One of the biggest roadblocks on the journey to making this possible is funding. Since Mars One’s launch in 2011, about $1million has been raised, mainly through donations, sales of merchandise, private investments, astronaut applications, sponsorships and partnerships. This money has been spent on building a small core team, the first conceptual design studies, developing and executing the first rounds of the Astronaut Selection Program, public outreach, and operational costs. More funding is imperative for the Mars One Project to succeed and as soon as the mission has been correctly funded then the carefully planned out project can really get started. 

Sending humans to Mars is a phenomenon undertaken by all standards and presents very real risks and challenges. Establishing a permanent settlement is very complex, but it is far less complex and requires much less infrastructure sent to Mars than return missions. The Mars One Project will ensure that a habitable settlement will await the first crew before they depart Earth. The hardware needed will be sent to Mars in the years ahead of the humans and as soon as they land a new world will await them.
